St. John’s rally falls short in crushing loss to Marquette as skid hits three: ‘Needed that win’

It was just 10 days ago that St. Johns left the Garden exuberant, believing it was on its way.

It was tied atop the Big East standings, off to its best start in league play in 23 years.

It feels like so much longer. Nothing has gone right since.

St. Johns has dropped three straight games after Saturday afternoons 73-72 setback to No. 17 Marquette, blowing a 10-point first-half lead.

The Johnnies defense was nowhere to be found after halftime, allowing the Golden Eagles to shoot a ridiculous 75 percent from the field in a second-half demolition.

Having Rick Pitino back on the sideline he missed the lopsided loss to Seton Hall due to a bout with COVID-19 didnt fix all of the problems facing this team, even if it did stage a furious rally in the final minutes.

Its really tough, another loss by one point, RJ Luis Jr. said. If we were locked in on one more possession, we couldve won the game. We really needed that win and we couldnt get it.

St. John’s not sealing statement win only raises stakes during daunting stretch

After absorbing a 28-0 run in the no-show in Newark, St. Johns was on the short end of a 28-10, second-half stretch here Saturday.

Co-stars Joel Soriano and Daniss Jenkins floundered until that late burst.

Jenkins committed six turnovers and Soriano again made little impact, producing 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Johnnies best player was Luis, who scored a game-high 20 points, and Chris Ledlum added 13 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

The Johnnies defense, though, was the issue.

It just couldnt stop Marquette after the break, allowing 45 second-half points.

After missing all 11 of their 3-point attempts in the opening half, the Golden Eagles (13-5, 4-3) went 6-for-9 from deep over the final 20 minutes.

Robert Sabo for NY PostIt didnt help that Nahiem Alleyne (sprained right ankle) was lost in the first half, and Jordan Dingle (COVID-19) remained out.

Reigning Big East Player of the Year Tyler Kolek was at his best after a slow start, finishing with 15 points, 11 assists and six rebounds, and Oso Ighodaro had 17 points.

St. Johns (12-7, 4-4) did get within one late and had multiple chances to either tie or go ahead but couldnt get over the hump.

Ledlum missed a go-ahead 3-pointer in the final seconds, and Jenkins missed a free throw with 38.9 seconds left and his 3-pointer at the buzzer came up agonizingly short.

Robert Sabo for NY PostPitino thought it was going in and so did his point guard, who regretted not holding his follow through enough on the shot.

I cant ask for a better shot than that. He was wide open, Pitino said. I fell down thinking it was going in. I thought it was dead on. I thought Ledlums shot was dead on. Obviously at 71, my eye-sights not great.

Afterward, Pitino was surprisingly optimistic.

He loved the fight, hustle and grit down the stretch, the 14-2 run St. Johns closed with.

Marquette mustered just two made free throws over the final 6:20 and committed three turnovers.

That response was lacking against Seton Hall, but not Saturday afternoon.

Robert Sabo for NY PostThat was a step forward, particularly down two of the teams top three guards.

Of St. Johns four league losses, three have come by a combined six points to No. 1 Connecticut, Marquette and No. 18 Creighton.

These are three teams that you could rank in the top 10 in the nation. Were rebuilding, and in all three games we not shouldve won, but could have won, Pitino said. I think we took a quantum leap, because were getting better. Tonight with six minutes to go in the game, they went after greatness.

“With six minutes to go, we aspired to be great. I know our players are hurt by this loss, but they should be hurt by Seton Hall, but not by this loss.

But there was a lot to like about the final six minutes.

Maybe next time, St. Johns will find a way to prevail the next time it is in a similar situation.

We know we will beat these teams, Jenkins said. I know we will get these teams when we see them again.
