Michigan State’s Jeremy Fears Jr. shot in leg while home for holiday break
Michigan State’s Jeremy Fears Jr. was shot in his leg in while home in Illinois for the holiday break, the university announced Saturday afternoon.
The freshman guard suffered non-life-threatening injuries and underwent surgery, per the school.
The nature of the surgery was not clear.
“Jeremy underwent surgery this morning and is resting comfortably,” Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said in a statement. “While there is much we still don’t know, my focus is on supporting Jeremy on his road to recovery.”
According to 1340 AM, the freshman was one of two people shot at 4 a.m. on Saturday in the Marycrest subdivision on the west side of Joliet.
According to ESPN, an officer from the Joliet Police Department said a public information officer was unavailable to discuss the incident because of the holiday.
Fears posted on his Instagram Story following the incident.
“Minor setback we gone be good appreciate yall,” he said with a heart emoji in a picture that appeared to be from a hospital bed.
