Rangers come alive late in OT win over Avalanche in return from break
This was the kind of win that boosts morale, and it came against the kind of team that inspires belief.
Coming out of the All-Star break to face a daunting pair of opponents in Colorado and Tampa Bay, the Blueshirts came alive in the third period Monday night to force overtime before Alexis Lafreniere scored 1:53 into the extra period to snag a 2-1 win over a fierce Avalanche team at Madison Square Garden.
The Rangers had no time to get their legs back underneath them after the eight-day break in game action.
Once they did, however, the Rangers made it count in order to kick off the final 33 games of the season on the right foot.
It was not the prettiest win maybe, Mika Zibanejad said. But a gutsy win that means a lot.
The messages inside the Rangers locker room during the second intermission was to just win the final period after they had trailed by a goal all night long.

Charles Wenzelberg / New York PostThe offensive drive they had been missing all game showed up in the final 20 minutes, in which Artemi Panarin evened the score at one-all with 8:43 left in regulation after he wristed the puck top shelf on ex-Ranger goalie Alexandar Georgiev.
After getting outshot in each of the previous two frames, the Rangers finally managed to tilt the ice in their favor in the third.
It was big against a really good team in this league, said Lafreniere, who took a drop pass from Zibanejad, pulled up and swept the puck right over Georgievs shoulder for his third overtime goal of his career.
The Rangers went scoreless through the first two periods and had only goalie Jonathan Quick (32 saves) to thank for their one-goal deficit.
The lack of goals was one thing a trend that has befallen the Rangers but the scarcity of quality scoring chances was entirely different. Posting three high-danger chances in the first period and just one in the second, the Rangers barely posed an offensive threat through 40 minutes.
Colorado, on the other hand, had already racked up 11 high-danger chances entering the second intermission.
The Rangers constantly gave up the puck. There was little to no attack. Colorado was primarily in control.
3Jonathan Quick makes a save during the Rangers’ win over the Avalanche on Feb. 5, 2024. Charles Wenzelberg / New York PostQuick, however, tracked nearly everything the Avalanche threw at him.
The first goal of the game didnt come until Nathan MacKinnon, now on a 14-game point streak, tore through the neutral zone and bulldozed into the Rangers zone at the end of the first period.
To be honest, its on me, head coach Peter Laviolette said of the aforementioned play. We knew what was coming at us and sometimes I feel like I can do a better job explaining things. We were in place, we were in position, but after that happened, we made a qick adjustment inside the room to be able to handle that speed a little bit more.
To get this win against the Central Division-leading Avalanche in the fashion that they did was crucial for a club that largely limped into the All-Star break.

The Lightning are next.
Colorado is an excellent team, Laviolette said. Theyre fast, I mean, theyre fast. And theyre deep, deep in the lines, deep on defense, goaltending. Coming off the break, I think it was a good way to jump-start post-break and get going. We ended with a win, come back, put one together and now you got something going. You try to build on it from there.
