Islanders fall in shootout to Kraken as playoff picture gets a bit bleaker
The Islanders are heading into their longest break of the second half with a whole lot to fix.
The shine hasnt quite worn off Patrick Roys arrival after just eight games, but it has become obvious that the Islanders problems were big enough that a new voice alone could not instantly fix it.
After a 2-1 shootout loss to Seattle on Tomas Tatars game-winner Tuesday, the Islanders second straight defeat on home ice, they are barreling into the Stadium Series with their playoff outlook in need of a boost.
Roy did not mince words following a performance in which the Islanders got a point by dint of a 29-save performance from Ilya Sorokin, getting dominated in possession and managing the puck poorly throughout.
The head coach started his postgame press conference by saying: I dont think any of us can be happy about this performance.
The fans were pissed and I was also pissed, he said.
4Ilya Sorokin makes a save during the Islanders’ shootout loss. Robert Sabo for NY PostTonight we were our own worst enemy. We did a good job generating offense on both sides of the ice.
This was not a night for silver linings.
Not only is the Isles deficit to the Flyers for third place in the Metropolitan at seven points, but the Devils have climbed a point ahead of them as well, with a game in hand to boot. Those margins are likely to grow over the next four days with the Islanders off until Sundays outdoor match against the Rangers at MetLife Stadium while the rest of the league keeps on playing.
That is not a particularly huge deal, since they will all finish with 82 games. But it does put the onus very much on the Islanders to win the games they have in hand and then a few more.
4Noah Dobson (No. 8) and Ilya Sorokin collide as former teammate Jordan Eberle takes a shot during the Islanders’ shootout loss to the Kraken. Robert Sabo for NY PostBased on what they put forth Tuesday, that may be a tall order.
The Islanders pulled themselves to 1-1 after 40 minutes thanks to Kyle Palmieris power-play goal late in the second, but couldnt come up with enough of a push to earn two points.
Sorokin kept the score tied throughout the period, in particular by stopping Alex Wennberg on a grade-A chance at the crease with 11:13 to go off Adam Pelechs turnover and getting a glove on Jamie Oleksiaks attempt with a hair under four minutes left.
But the breakouts and structure Roy has been trying to build up were not there on Tuesday, with the Islanders reverting back into leaning on Sorokin while hoping they could convert on an offensive chance every now and then.
4Seattle center Matty Beniers celebrates with teammates after scoring during the first period of the Islanders’ 2-1 shootout loss to the Kraken. Robert Sabo for NY PostThat got them a point and they hung on during a four-on-three penalty kill in overtime. But in the skills competition, Philipp Grubauer had the better of Sorokin, stopping all three shots while Tatar converted the only goal for Seattle.
The Islanders, however, were a step behind in this one from the get-go, with Ryan Pulock saying their energy only came after the first five to seven minutes. That happens to be after Matty Beniers had already scored off the rush 5:27 into the night to put Seattle ahead 1-0.
I think at times you gotta look in the mirror and have yourself ready, Pulock said. Each individual, it comes down to that. You gotta put the onus on yourself to be ready right from the start.
This was a night where the Islanders, at least, told themselves the hard truth about how they played. That is a welcome shift from the Lane Lambert era, when poor performances were too often whisked away.
4The Islanders celebrate Kyle Palmieri’s goal against the Kraken. Robert Sabo for NY PostAt times I thought we were really good and at times I just kinda think we let them have it a little bit, Bo Horvat said. If we want to be successful going forward or win hockey games, we have to have possession time.
Making the situation worse is stop us if youve heard this before that Grubauer was playing his first game since Dec. 9, in conjunction with Seattle having played on Monday in New Jersey. The Kraken had also lost eight of their last 10 coming in.
A situation tailor-made for the Islanders to take advantage, in which they could not do so.
The NHL tracked 23 turnovers in that game, Roy said. Its hard to win games when you do that. Its almost like youre shooting on your own foot. No one in this dressing room can be pleased with this. We missed that opportunity.
The clock is ticking.
