Pierre Engvall becomes latest Islanders injury concern

WINNIPEG, Manitoba Add another injury onto the pile.

Pierre Engvall was out of the lineup for Tuesdays 4-2 Islanders loss to the Jets with an upper-body injury and declared day-to-day by the team.

Engvall joins Ryan Pulock, Semyon Varlamov, Casey Cizikas and Robert Bortuzzo on a shelf that has been occupied by a rotating cast since opening night.

Without him, and in the wake of Mondays disastrous 5-0 loss to the Wild, Isles coach Lane Lambert shook up the lineup against the Jets.

Bo Horvat and Mat Barzal were re-separated with Oliver Wahlstrom back on the right side of Horvat.

Barzal skated between Simon Holmstrom and Cal Clutterbuck on the third line while Hudson Fasching was moved up to the second line with Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri.

The prognosis on Engvall, who skated 14:54 on Monday night, amounted to a shoulder shrug.

We have two days before playing the Blackhawks so well see, Lambert said, asked about Engvalls status for Fridays game.

Ilya Sorokin started for the second consecutive day on Tuesday after the Islanders pulled him for the final 20 minutes of Mondays loss in hopes of saving his energy, stopping 40 of 43 shots.

One of the goals he did let up came on a freak play when Sorokin lost a skate blade and as a result could not get over to contest Neal Pionks shot on the power play at 15:19 of the second period.

APIts just unfortunate, Lambert said. Weve had a couple of interesting goals on this trip. When youre fighting it a little bit or struggling a little bit, sometimes these things happen. The ally-oop goal at the end of the game in Nashville and tonight this one here.

We just have to make sure we find a way here. Stay positive and keep going.

Varlamov has been on the ice once in his recovery from a lower-body injury, Lambert said.

Pulock, Cizikas and Bortuzzo have all yet to begin skating.

Jets winger Kyle Connor returned to the lineup for his first game since Dec. 10, with Mark Scheifele going on injured reserve to open up a roster spot for the former 40-goal scorer.
