Carter Hart taking indefinite leave of absence in Flyers mystery

Carter Hart is taking an indefinite leave of absence from the Flyers, Philadelphia general manager Daniel Briere announced Tuesday.

No concrete details have emerged over why the Flyers starting goaltender is stepping away from the club.

Carter Hart has requested and been granted an indefinite leave of absence citing personal reasons. The club will have no further comment at this time, Briere said in a brief statement.

The news came after Hart, 25, did not participate in Tuesday’s morning skate at the team’s practice facility in Vorhees, N.J., and head coach John Tortorella announced that Samuel Ersson would make his second consecutive start on Tuesday against the Lightning.

The ex-Rangers bench boss gave a simple yes when a reporter asked if Hart was healthy, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Hart, in his sixth season with the Flyers, holds a 12-9-3 record with a 2.80 goals-against average and .906 save percentage with one shutout this year.

USA TODAY Sports via Reuters ConHart dealt with a back injury and food poisoning in early November, and he later suffered from an undisclosed illness in December.

It has been going on for a while, Hart said to NBC Sports Philadelphia on Dec. 16. I used to never get sick and now I think Ive been sick three times in the last month, so something is going on. Its good that we got to the bottom of it and figured it out. Now I can take the right steps to treat it and fix it and feel better going forward.”

The goaltender is in the final year of a three-year, $11.937 million contract and will be a restricted free agent after this season.
