Brian Daboll ruined Tyrod Taylor’s chance at his signature Giants moment
Tyrod Taylor was poised to win this one, even after he had short-armed a two-point conversion attempt from the 1 behind a wide-open Saquon Barkley that left the score Rams 26, Giants 25 and left Taylor bent over holding his helmet in his hands.
Even after he had tried to bring the Giants back with a beautiful 80-yard rainbow TD to Darius Slayton.
Taylor got the ball back at his 35 with 1:08 and no timeouts left.
And after Barkley dropped a pass wide open over the middle, Taylor saw an opening and raced 31 yards, to the Rams 34. I was able to capture the right edge, Taylor said.
He spiked the ball with 0:42 on the clock.
Then Brian Daboll cost Taylor a chance to have his most significant Giants moment.
Remember: In Mason Crosby, Daboll and OC Mike Kafka had an ancient, recently-signed FG kicker who had missed a PAT earlier, whose career long is 58 yards.
On second-and-10, Barkley ran a draw up the middle and lost two yards.
3Tyrod Taylor threw for 319 yards, one touchdown and an interception in the Giants’ loss Sunday. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post3Brian Daboll said he’d like to have the play back when the Giants ran a draw with Saquon Barkley. USA TODAY Sports via Reuters ConId like to have it back, was all Daboll would say when the inquisition began.
The next two questions went like this:
Was that a check or the play call was a run?

What did you think Masons range was on that last drive?
That was right at the edge of it, Daboll said.
It is incompressible that a coach this intelligent could be talking about liking to have a brain-locked call like that back.
Crosby, of course, missed the 54-yard field goal wide left following an incompletion, and it ended Rams 26, Giants 25 on a day when the visiting FG kicker had missed a pair of PATs.
I have confidence in every play we call, Taylor said. At the end of the day, we didnt do a good job of executing that draw play. We have to learn from it and go forward.
The play should never have been called.
Daboll is obviously aware that Taylor is not in any way, shape or form Josh Allen, but putting the game in Taylors hands there was a better option than putting the game on Crosbys 39-year-old right foot. Thought we could get some extra yardage in that situation, Taylor said. Ultimately, they ran a stunt and were able to be better than us in that moment.
Taylor was temporarily interested in going backward to The Two-Point Conversion That Wasnt, because that one was on him.

Giants Week 17 report card: Brian Daboll should have vetoed ill-advised call
He was wracked with indecision over whether he should attempt to run it into the end zone or get it to Barkley, and he wound up doing neither, with 3:27 remaining.
Anytime you are indecisive on the football field, Taylor said, its never a good thing.
In many ways, the day summed up his 13-year career as Mr. Almost.
Good enough to be one of the NFLs best backups but not quite good enough to hold onto a starting job.
Taylor had fumbled a fourth-and-1 snap at the NYG 47 and thrown an interception in the second quarter, and you heard Tommy chants for Tommy DeVito from the MetLife crowd.
It was inevitable because no one wants to let go of Cinderella, and Tyrod Taylor has been around long enough and as a backup quarterback himself all these years to understand that this is the way it works everybody loves the backup quarterback.
3Tyrod Taylor replaced Tommy DeVito last week, started Sunday and nearly led the Giants to a comeback victory. USA TODAY Sports via Reuters ConTaylor deserved better.
It was 26-19 when he stepped up in the pocket and found Jalin Hyatt for 47 yards … except for a holding penalty on Daniel Bellinger.

Giants’ mistake-filled performance was metaphor to a lost season
On third-and-19, Taylor found Bellinger for 18 yards … except a fourth-and-1 throw underneath to Hyatt lost a yard.
A 15-yard scramble out of bounds was nullified by a John Michael Schmitz holding call.
I think I played well, but like I told you, I judge myself off wins and losses, Taylor said, and ultimately, today wasnt a winning performance.
At least Taylor (27-41, 319 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 6-40 rushing) displayed his resilience and fought back to give the Giants a chance to win. There would be one more question for Daboll about the fateful play call:
Would you have jumped in and vetoed it and kind of changed the play call at all before it got to that point of being a run?
Yeah, Id just like to have it back. Daboll said.
Any head coach would.
If it works, its the right call, Barkley said. If it doesnt, its a bad call.
It didnt.
