Lacking Rangers hit hard in loss to Senators

OTTAWA, Ontario Not many teams have been able to bludgeon the Rangers the way the Senators did Tuesday night.

With a surplus of odd-man rushes, puck battles won and, well, goals, Ottawa just kept coming to hand the Blueshirts a discomfiting 6-2 loss at Canadian Tire Center.

The defeat snapped a three-game winning streak for the Rangers and was just their fifth regulation loss through 24 games this season.

But it also marked the fifth time in the past six games that the Rangers gave up three or more goals, as well as the second straight allowing five or more.

I think we needed to do a better job defensively, head coach Peter Laviolette said. There were too many things where they were coming at us with speed and I dont think we layered properly. We dont do the right things with regard to defending, taking care of the rush, they got behind us. Different reasons. All teachable things and things we can get better at and show. Tonight, it caught us a little.

With 29 saves on 34 shots, Shesterkin fell to 10-5-0 on the season.

Opposing netminder Anton Forsberg, on the other hand, was stellar.

The Rangers, particularly Alexis Lafreniere, were robbed of quite a few goals by the Senators goalie, who finished with 33 saves on 35 shots.

Playing their third game in four nights, the Rangers were also down to 11 forwards by the end of the first period after Barclay Goodrow took a puck directly to the face and went to the locker room.

He lost a tooth or two, and it was enough to keep the utility forward out for the remainder of the game.

This wasnt a matter of personnel or tiredness, however, it was a lack of fluidity on offense, structure on defense and overall engagement.

I think theyre just one of those teams that can kind of sense something is going on and they take off, said Mika Zibanejad, who assisted on Artemi Panarins power-play goal that got the Rangers on the board 39 seconds into the second period to cut the Senators lead 2-1. They get in behind. Obviously, we have to do a better job making sure that if they do try to get in behind us that we pull out. I dont know, its just overall not a good night.

Ottawa broke the game open in the second period with three goals to the Rangers two, after the home team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes.

Former Ranger Vladimir Tarasenko enjoyed a three-point night, including a crucial goal just over five minutes into the middle frame to make it a 3-1 game and a nail-in-the-coffin empty-net goal at the end of the game.

After KAndre Miller kept the Rangers in it with a goal 22 seconds after Tarasenkos, Ottawa capped off the period with a goal from Drake Batherson and Brady Tkachuks second goal of the night.

Claude Giroux also doubled the Senators score, 2-0, after Tkachuk opened the scoring in the opening frame.

I think we were pretty loose that game, Adam Fox said. Seemed like especially that second period was run and gun, guys behind us, odd-man rushes. Just a sloppy one out of us, definitely one to forget.
