Another Zach Wilson win could grant an Aaron Rodgers Christmas wish
Look, this is the time of year when youre allowed to be a little kid again, right? And little kids arent restrained by the restrictions of real life. They are allowed to dabble in the fantastic. Did you really get every item on your wish list, even waiting for 30 minutes to visit Santa in an A&S or a Korvettes?
By 7:30 Christmas morning, after gleefully tearing into whatever was under the tree, you were already doing inventory on what wasnt there, right?
You still came back next year, shooting for the moon.
If you are a Jets fan, you are allowed to shoot for the moon Sunday afternoon when you watch the Jets and the Dolphins do battle at Miamis Hard Rock Stadium. You already got your Big Wheel last week, in the form of a dominant and losing-streak-ending 30-6 upset win against the Texans. Thats fine.
Zach Wilson #2, hands the ball off to New York Jets running back Dalvin Cook #33, in the 4th quarter against the Texans. Charles Wenzelberg / New York PostYou can still ask for the Atari set (replete with Asteroids and Space Invaders), which is what knocking off the Dolphins as an 8.5-point road dog would be.
And if that happens?
Well, then its OK to close your eyes and ask for the brand-new Schwinn 3-speed. Because a win against the Dolphins who sure looked vulnerable six days ago in gagging away a two-touchdown lead, at home, to the Titans would do a few most remarkable things:
1. It would keep the right-hand side of the Jets won-loss record locked on 8.
2. And that would keep them at least peripherally alive in the AFC playoff race for at least one more week.
3. And that would fulfill the basic parameters for Aaron Rodgers to come trotting onto the MetLife turf on Christmas Eve when the Commanders come calling.

Now, that last one is still no guarantee, despite the fact Rodgers was reported to have amped up his workouts this week with at least the possibility of this most improbable of returns from the Achilles injury he suffered opening night against Buffalo. It is still entirely possible that if that moment presents itself sometime next week, and Rodgers has to officially declare himself in or out, that out might carry the day.
You might actually argue (as your humble narrator would) that it would be entirely probable thats the case. An Achilles isnt a twisted ankle. Discretion, in this case, really might be the better part of valor.
But dont let me Ebenezer Scrooge you away from hope.
If you are a Jets fan, you have waded through more muck in a season that was supposed to deliver so much, so why not ask for the dice, blow on them and let it ride? Why not see if Zach Wilson can double-up his spectacular second half a week ago against the team for which he was benched on Black Sunday, before handing the ball back to Rodgers on his merry way to Carolina or Arizona or wherever hell spend next season?
What do you have to lose, besides another football game?
Robert Saleh talks with quarterback Aaron Rodgers (8) at practice in Florham Park, NJ. Bill Kostroun/New York PostHe pushed it a little bit. He went under center, hes running boots and jogging from drill to drill, and he looks normal to me, coach Robert Saleh said of Rodgers. Credit to him, especially in this day and age, where a hangnail can affect a game week. but this dude is grinding to get himself back. It just shows how much he cares, and I have an appreciation for him.
If the Jets really can pull this off, if Rodgers is really wearing No. 8 on Christmas Eve, it will instantly make Jets-Commanders the most fascinating game in NFL history between teams who, through 15 weeks, have suffered through the seasons that land somewhere between poor and pathetic.
First, Miami. First, a Dolphins team that has to be extra salty after their Monday night meltdown. First, Wilson must double down, and the Jets must sprint right behind him. Its still a crazy long shot for all of that to happen.
But if youre going to dream crazy dreams what better time of year to do it?
