Chris Russo’s famous Super Bowl trivia contest is no more
One of the great Super Bowl traditions in sports media is no more.
For the first time in eons, Chris Russo is not doing his customary trivia for his radio listeners to win a trip to the Super Bowl.
Russo has done the yearly trivia since joining SiriusXM in 2008, and did it for years before that on WFAN with Mike Francesa, when he would dress up as the regal “marquis.”
A SiriusXM spokesperson confirmed to The Post that Russo is not doing the contest for Super Bowl 2024 in Las Vegas.
Some questions were nearly impossible, while others were so easy that Russo would lambast listeners for getting them wrong, going viral in his condemnation of someone calling in without purportedly simple knowledge.
One die-hard listener, who identifies himself on X as Sean Boardman, tweeted earlier this week that Russo has said on-air that he would not be doing the contest this year after former Mad Dog Radio Executive Producer Bill Zimmerman, who did all the trivia preparation, was laid off in a round of SiriusXM cost cuts in 2023.
Chris Russo isn’t doing his famous Super Bowl contest this year. ESPNReached by The Post, Zimmerman said he didn’t know one way or the other if Russo had continued doing the contest this year, but agreed to discuss the parameters of what he did to help the Mad Dog prepare.
“The majority of the work fell on my shoulders,” Zimmerman said, noting that he would fact-check the archive of about 1,000 old questions to make sure they were still current.
“The Super Bowl III MVP — that’s not going to change, but the last SEC quarterback to win a Super Bowl, for example, could be fluid.”
He would also cull together themes, ranging from being based on the Super Bowl host city or tying together football family members.
Additionally, he would stitch together the profoundly difficult audio clips.
While some of the audio was culled from postgame interviews, others would be done via interviews with former Super Bowl participants where Zimmerman would track them down and then cut up the clips.
Examples of the plethora of people he reached were Bears Hall of Fame offensive lineman Jimbo Covert, former Patriots tight end Ben Coates and Thomas Morestead, the ex-Saints punter who famously executed an onside kick in the Super Bowl against the Colts.
For the first few years at SiriusXM, Russo would conduct these interviews, but eventually, they were delegated to Zimmerman.
Chris Russo, as the Marquis, with Mike Francesa.“The idea was that if you’re going to win a trip to the Super Bowl, it can’t be Google-able,” Zimmerman said.
“We shied away from star quarterbacks or coaches, whose voices might be recognized by listeners, and really tried to make it so they would have to understand the clues and figure out the context in order to win such a big prize.”
