Miami’s Cam McCormick gets record ninth year of NCAA eligibility
Miami tight end Cam McCormick has been granted an unprecedented ninth year of eligibility for 2024, he confirmed in a post on X on Thursday.
McCormick started his collegiate football career in 2016, but significant injuries and COVID had allowed him the extra time of eligibility.
The 25-year-old is calling this upcoming season his last ride, which began in Oregon when he was a three-star prospect out of Bend, Oregon.
McCormick redshirted his freshman year and then appeared in 13 games as a reserve in 2017, but injuries over the next four seasons derailed his career.
McCormick broke his leg in 2018 and suffered complications that cost him the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He then had a foot injury two weeks in the 2021 campaign.
He finally got to play a full season in 2022 and transferred to Miami before the 2023 season. McCormick had eight catches for 62 yards last season for the Hurricanes.

AP“I’m blessed that it was me to go through it because a lot of people would have folded under the pressure — both mentally and physically,” McCormick said in an interview with ESPN. “But it’s pushed me to be a better person and teammate — everything. I’ve learned so much from every year and everything I’ve had to overcome.”
McCormick had been granted a sixth year of eligibility in 2019 and the NCAA awarded all FBS players an extra season due to COVID.
He was then granted eighth and ninth years of eligibility in 2023, but he had to resubmit a waiver to the ACC in order to get that ninth year, which was approved by the conference.

“I feel like my journey can help those that have to experience that,” McCormick said. “It’s tough, but hopefully there’s some inspiration there, and guys who get injured can see my journey and dig deep within and keep pushing toward their goals and their future.”
McCormick is already tied for the longest NCAA football career in history. TNSThe Hurricanes finished the 2023 season 7-6 and lost to Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl last month.
