Top quarterback recruit Julian Sayin to enter transfer portal in latest Alabama blow
The new-look Crimson Tide are getting into some choppy waters.
Alabama is losing another high-profile recruit in the wake of Nick Saban’s surprise retirement, with freshman quarterback Julian Sayin expected to enter the transfer portal Friday, according to ESPN.
A five-star recruit and the top-ranked QB in the class of ’24, Sayin reportedly wanted to play for Saban and now plans to explore his options.
The loss marks the latest for new head coach Kalen DeBoer, who was hired to replace the legendary Saban last week.
“That’s a big one,” Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel wrote of Sayin’s decision.
In the days since, the program has lost freshman All-American safety Caleb Downs, top returning wide receiver Isaiah Bond and seven other players.
In total, 25 scholarship players have exited the program this offseason.
On Thursday, DeBoer, the ex-Washington coach, did get some relief from a familiar face, adding ex-Huskies quarterback Austin Mack.

He’ll join returning starter Jalen Milroe, redshirt sophomore Ty Simpson and Dylan Lonergan in a strong QB room.
Sayin, who threw for 2,369 yards, 24 touchdowns and one interception as a high school senior, will have plenty of school to choose from.
He received 25 offers during his recruiting process, per 247Sports, including ones from Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State.
Kalen DeBoer’s Alabama tenure has started with several players entering the transfer portal. USA TODAY Sports via Reuters ConSayin committed to Alabama more than a year ago and enrolled this month, but DeBoer replacing offensive coordinator Tommy Rees with Ryan Grubb may have hastened his departure.
According to Sayin’s coach at Carlsbad (Calif.) High School, the QB was particularly close with Rees.
He wants to see who theyre gonna hire, whos gonna be the OC, Thadd MacNeal told The Athletic before reports surfaced stating Grubb would fill that role. Obviously, Alabamas gonna get someone really, really good at that position.

— Julian Sayin (@juliansayin2) December 11, 2023(Sayin) was fine. It wasnt like, Oh, panic. Its kind of the nature of the business a little bit. Hes already started classes, so hes in it. Its a matter of his class, of who theyre gonna be able to keep. The coordinators gonna be important because he had a good relationship with coach (Tommy) Rees.
