Gus Alfieri, St. John’s standout and long-time St. Anthony’s coach, dead at 87
Gus Alfieri, a former St. Johns University basketball star and long-time St. Anthonys high school coach, died Monday at the age of 87, the school announced.
The Long Island native played three seasons at St. Johns under legendary coach Joe Lapchick, averaging 10.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 43.6 percent shooting over 72 career games.
Alfieri helped lead St. Johns to the 1959 NIT championship which at the time was the equivalent of winning the NCAA Tournament by scoring 15 points during a 76-71 win over Bradley at Madison Square Garden on March 21, 1959.
Alfieri moved to the sidelines following his playing career.
He ran the All-American Basketball Camp for more than 50 years and spent nearly two decades coaching the boys basketball team at St. Anthonys High School in South Huntington from 1968-1985.
Alfieri led the Friars to a 328-106 record, two New York State championships and four NSCHSAA crowns.

He entered the St. Johns Hall of Fame in 2023.
Alfieri wrote multiple books including Lapchick: The Life of a Legendary Player and Coach in the Glory Days of Basketball and The Heart of a Champion: A Basketball Coachs Memoir of a Championship Team that chronicled his 1973-74 season with the Friars.
